Dear Well Wisher,
Like many first time visitors to Mumbai, the Ursuline Sisters, in 1978, were stunned by the presence of vast slums, co-existing with wealth. The Sisters acted immediately - they set up a clinic in the Bandra East slum, from which humble origin, grew Navjeet.
Navjeet's catch phrase is "Empowerment" which means "self-determined change". Access to information, inclusion and participation, accountability and local organisational capacity are tools that Navjeet has used to empower the marginalised.
At Navjeet, children, women, youth and senior citizens are provided with opportunities for empowerment. One of the notable successes so far has been that all the children covered under our programs are attending school. Through various educational programs, leadership training, community organisation and economic empowerment activities, women have been given the capacity to take up issues which are important to their lives, resulting in the overall improvement in their status and a decline in domestic violence. The strength of the once-neglected woman has thus been harnessed towards the overall development of the community.
Over the past 30 years, the Navjeet cause has been supported by very many dedicated staff and volunteers, and funded by individuals and institutions. It has partnered with corporates, NGOs, specialised institutions to create strong, research-backed projects to empower the impoverished.
Welcome to Navjeet! We cordially invite you to browse our website. You, too, can be an Agent of Empowerment for the weaker sections of our society.
With best wishes,
Sister Kusum
Director
